Whether you are a style setter often changing the shades of your hair color, occasionally dyeing for a complete overhaul at the salon, or even your first time coloring your hair, you’ll definitely want to keep your hair healthy while hoping your hair color can last as long as possible. After all, the color will fade with every wash, beginning from the first wash after the dye.
Besides using shampoos for colored hair, simple changes in your grooming routine can make a drastic difference in maintaining your hair color and texture, and we’re about to show you how!
The type of shampoo that you use plays a huge role in maintaining your hair color! Look out for shampoos with harsh ingredients such as sulphates and alcohols as they will strip the color and moisture from your hair.
Made with gentler, milder, and moisturising ingredients, color-safe shampoos are helpful in maintaining your hair color and aid in strengthening the hair cuticle, which in turn will lock the color molecules inside the hair for longer-lasting retention.
Moist Diane’s Miracle You series of color shampoos are enriched with plant-derived ingredients and antioxidants to form a protective barrier around your hair cuticle to protect your hair from free-radicals. This helps to maintain hair color and prevents it from fading from UV exposure and frequent washing.
Besides using color shampoos, here are other lifestyle tips to maintain your hair color!
Showering in hot water may be relaxing after a long day of work, but it doesn’t do good to maintain your hair color. Hot water causes the hair cuticle to open further, which may cause some of the color to be rinsed out during the wash.
Besides affecting the hair color, hot water is also known to remove essential oils and moisture from your hair, which causes dehydration and frizzy or static hair.
To prevent this from happening, just make sure that you adjust the water heater to a lower and cooler temperature when you are washing your hair!
If you really want to shower with hot water, just turn up the temperature after you wash your hair while you continue with your shower.
Where you wash your hair matters. Try to avoid applying too much shampoo from the middle section of your hair to your hair ends to prevent gradual stripping off the colors. Instead, try to focus your shampoo on your roots to cleanse your scalp.
Use your finger tips to gently massage your scalp with minimal pressure during shampooing, and let the shampoo naturally rinse down the hair shaft.
Prolonged exposure to UV rays from the sun can cause your hair color to fade as the heat plays a part in breaking down the chemical bonds in hair dyes. Besides causing discoloration, it also damages hair cuticles which then causes split-ends.
This also stands true for heat styling tools, such as blowdryers, curling irons and hair straighteners. The high heat opens up the hair cuticles, which causes the hair dye to bleed out easily. When you need to style your hair, keep in mind to do it in moderation. Otherwise, use a heat protectant hair spray or serum to protect your hair cuticles to make your hair color last.
This chemical bleaching agent used to clean the pool will also clean the colors off your hair.
To minimize contact with chlorine, try moisturising your hair with some serum before diving into the pool!
